Why I Use a Macro Calculator to Help My Clients Lose Fat FAST!

There are so many weight loss fads out there; flavors of the month that guarantee you amazing results. I always do my research and look into them, but I have rarely, if ever, actually adopted any of them into Total Body Transformation (my weight loss program for women over 40!). Why? Because I’ve got something that has been proven to be effective, has been around forever, and is sustainable, by which I mean you can use it for the rest of your life! And that’s Macro balancing.

It’s quite simple, really: Macronutrients are Proteins, Fats and Carbohydrates, while Micronutrients are things like vitamins and minerals. I like to lump fiber and water in with Macros because I find them just as important. Counting or Calculating Your Macros refers to the act of finding the right ratio between these three things in order to achieve specific goals.

If we take a look at the three macronutrients, we see they all play incredibly significant roles in the body: carbs are the body’s preferred source of energy, providing power to not just our muscles, but also our brain; Protein is used to build and maintain muscles, joints and tissues; Fats help with the absorption of vitamins and minerals, play a very important role in hormone production and regulation, and can deal with cell growth as well. So we need all of these things in order to have a robust, healthy, energetic body! But the ratio in which we take them in can have different effects.

When I say ratio, what exactly do I mean? Well, if the average woman in her 40s or older is taking in the recommended 1800 calories (this number can fluctuate depending on the level of physical activity you’re engaged in), what is the macronutrient makeup of those 1800 calories? Maybe it’s something like 45% Carbohydrates, 35% Proteins and 20% Fats.

So, we can play with this ratio and get different results. The annoying thing is, it’s different for every person! It can depend on your weight, your height, your level of daily physical activity, etc. So it can be a bit annoying to try to calculate the macro ratio that’s best for you without a whole bunch of trial and error!

But I’ve got a fix for that. So don’t you worry! We’ll come back to that later. Right now I want to talk about why calculating macros works! Because you might be thinking “I already eat carbs, fats and proteins, and I’m not losing any weight!” So how does this whole thing work?

Well, first and foremost, tracking our macros gives us an understanding of where the bulk of our calories are coming from. While most of us think we’re getting in enough healthy protein, carbs and fats, the reality is, we’re usually not. So I love getting my clients to track macros because it becomes so obvious that their diet is in need of tweaking. It used to be very common for people to not be taking in as much protein as they needed, with the bulk of calories coming from refined or simple carbs. Nowadays I see more people taking in tons of protein, but virtually no carbohydrates (and usually the carbs that are coming in, are not of a good quality). So a big benefit of adopting macros is the knowledge that comes with it!

The second is identifying the quality of the macros you take in. As my clients get stronger and start engaging in more physical activity, they need the energy to fuel and replenish their bodies! I’ve seen tons of people who started hitting the gym hard, but also cutting calories significantly and, eventually, they just burn out completely! It’s totally unsustainable! So they need to up their carbohydrate intake, but they need to do it with quality carbs. Ones that provide energy, but also provide things like vitamins, minerals, and fiber!

And with the increased physical activity, proteins are needed to help rebuild and repair the body. There is such a thing as low quality protein! We want proteins that are easily absorbed by the body, and contain complete amino acid profiles. These can be meat-based or plant-based, there’s really great options in both columns! But there’s also plenty of bad! So, when we start calculating macros, I tend to see a huge change in the caliber of protein coming in.

Same with fats of course. Too many trans-fats or saturated (which is good in small quantities) fats, and we don’t get the benefits that we want! No hormone balancing, anti-inflammatory qualities that we need!

So I find this increased awareness of what’s coming in to be the first benefit, and a contributing factor to the fast fat loss I see in my clients. But the second part is where the power really lies. And that’s in the ability to quickly and easily shift the macro ratio to account for different needs. For example, if you’ve just had a really big week at the gym, where maybe you’ve been lifting heavier weights than you usually do. During that phase, you might increase your carbs a bit to account for the need for some extra energy, and then afterwards you might increase the ratio of proteins and fats to enhance recovery. With some clients, especially women closing in on menopause, I adjust their macros depending on where they are in their cycle, to make sure they’re nourishing their bodies with the right nutrients for their current needs.

The thing is, it can be a lot. I get that. And so, I’ve got two things that can help you. The first, is my FREE macro calculator, which can be found here: https://www.simonelovell.com/macro-calculator

You can simply punch in a few details about yourself, like height, weight, etc., and the free macro calculator will pump out your results! It will even break it down for you so you know how many carbs/proteins/fats you need in a day, broken out into individual meals, as well as snacks!

Now, it’s not uncommon to feel overwhelmed by macro balancing when you start out. And I get that. Macro Balancing can be hard on your own, even with a macro calculator!! But, that’s why I’m here! It’s my job to help you navigate the ups and downs and make things easier! If you’re interested in working with me, click here to learn more!
