Does OATzempic Really Work?!

I can hear you already: “OATzempic? Don’t you mean Ozempic Simone?” Unfortunately, no… I don’t mean Ozempic. Oatzempic is the latest ridiculous diet trend circulating on social media, mainly TikTok. The gist of it is that, instead of a proper breakfast, you mix half a cup of oats with a cup of water and lime juice, blend it all together, and drink it. Yuck. But people are claiming to have lost 40 lbs in a month’s time!

So, is it legit? Well, no, of course not. If you’re losing 40 lbs in a month, it’s unlikely what you’re doing is healthy, sustainable, and going to provide true, lifelong, body changes. Now that’s not to say people couldn’t lose weight doing this, but not because Oatzempic is some magic pill. Likely, if people truly are seeing weight loss on this, it’s a result of a simple caloric deficit. So, they’ve swapped out their normal breakfast for something that has less calories. But you could do the same by eating a piece of cardboard for breakfast. That doesn’t make it healthy.

There’s nothing inherently special about the Oatzempic recipe, and if you were to engage in this silliness for a short period of time, it’s likely there wouldn’t be any long term damage, but it begs the question: why?! Why eat oats in their least flavourful state? Why not simply cook the oats? Add some cinnamon, vanilla, maybe a handful of nuts or seeds? If you’re going to replace an unhealthy breakfast with oats, I am ALL for it, but at least do it in a palatable way! And don’t expect to lose 40 lbs in a month. The old adage “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!” seems apt. In my 20+ years as a professional nutritionist and strength & conditioning coach, I’ve never seen anything that can provide results like that, unless it was a client who was suffering from severe, severe, obesity and had some type of medical intervention. Other than that, if someone was losing that much weight, they would put it right back on again once they stopped whatever regime they were on.

And that’s really what drives me crazy. Social media fads and scams like this are simply preying on people who want to make their lives better, but don’t have the knowledge or expertise to know how. They see all these posts and take that as gospel truth and then try it, only to not get where they want to go. And then they feel down. They blame themselves. They decide maybe it’s just not possible. And that kills me. Because, of course it’s possible!!! Science has proven there are clear, simple and incredibly effective ways to get in shape! But there’s just a mass of garbage out there, some of which is very tantalizing and incentivizing, and the truth gets lost!

So, let me say right here what my “secret” is to helping people get in shape. It’s not a fad, it’s not a quick-fix, and it’s not really even a secret!!

Exercise - get five 20/30 minute high intensity workouts in a week.

Food - Eat a macro balanced diet. Nourish your body with delicious, nutrient-rich foods, making sure you’re getting in the appropriate amount of calories (meaning you’re not starving yourself). Make sure you drink enough water and eat enough fiber.

Support - don’t do it alone. No one has ever succeeded without help. Get a community, find your people, and share your challenges and successes with them. When you’re struggling, let them help you through it.

Do these three things. That’s it. And if you put in the work, this is the fastest way to fat loss and to achieving your goals. Every. Single. Client. I’ve ever had, who has stuck to these 3 things has not only achieved their goals, they’ve surpassed them!! And they’ve maintained their goals for years and years. And by the way, my clients are not young, already fit, people in their early 20s! Some of my most successful clients are well into their 50s and 60s! So it doesn’t matter if you’re 28 or 82, if you adopt those three key things, I guarantee that you will succeed.

So don’t waste your time with OATzempic, or any other TikTok fad for that matter! If you want to get on the morning oatmeal train, go for it! But there’s no need to blend it up with lime juice and drink it cold!
